The Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Cross River chapter, Comrade Ben Ukpepi, who was kidnapped last Tuesday has finally been released by his abductors.
The NLC Chieftain was released yesterday at about 9pm last night, the Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Irene Ugbo told Radio Nigeria.
Mrs Ugbo who declined to give details of the release of Comrade Ukpepi, said the rescue was made possible by a team of security agencies in the state.
The Police Command’s spokesperson added that the victim was currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Calabar.
Though there was an unconfirmed report that a ransom of five million naira was paid to secure the release of the labour leader as against the twenty million naira initially demanded by the abductors, the PPRO however claimed that no ransom was paid.
