FG to create jobs in border communities

Yewa North, (formerly Egbado North), is a Local Government Area in the west of Ogun State, Nigeria bordering the Republic of Benin

The federal government say business opportunities would be provided for residents of border communities in Ogun State, to cushion the effects of the ongoing border closure.

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, stated this while inaugurating a Forward Operations Base (FOB) of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) at Oja Odan, a border community in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State.

He said smuggling, illegal migration and subversive economic activities at the borders have over the years undermined Nigeria’s economic sovereignty.

“Perpetrators of illegal activities took advantage of the nation’s porous borders, which has resulted in huge importation duty accruing to Nigeria, drastically reducing.”

He urged immigration officials to be vigilant and ensure that these untoward practices are brought to a halt.

The minister, who observed that many residents are unhappy about the border closure policy, assured that the federal government will create legitimate businesses to replace the illegal economic activities at the borders.

Comptroller-General (NIS) Muhammed Babandede had said the FOB was to strengthen border security; to provide a conducive working environment for operatives at the border, noting that 12 of such FOBs have been constructed across the country.
