The Minister of Transportation, Mr. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has charged contractors handling the Lagos Ibadan rail modernization project to speed up work.
Mr. Amaechi who gave the charge while inspecting the project, expressed displeasure over the slow pace of work.
He revealed that the Federal Government had kept to its own side of the loan agreement for the job by paying most of its counterpart funds, and the federal executive council had also approved all the contract variations for the expansion of the project.
The Minister said laying of tracks from Ebutte Metta to the heart of Lagos would begin soon, as all the impediments on the right of way, such as oil pipelines would soon be removed.
The Minister of State, Transportation, Gbemisola Saraki said the APC administration was committed to the rail projects in the country, because apart from taking cargo off the roads, it would create jobs.
Managing Director, Nigeria Railway Corporation also gave an assurance that the linkage between the rail line and the Apapa Port would soon be achieved as funds for it had been approved.
The Lagos Ibadan rail modernization project began in 2016,and is been constructed at a cost of 1.58 billion dollars.
