Zamfara Bandits surrender weapons

Repentant Bandits in Zamfara State have surrendered Forty Nine different calibre of firearms to Police.

The state commissioner of police CP Usman Nagogo revealed this to newsmen during a Press Briefing in the Command’s headquarters, Gusau.

Repentant Bandits surrendered the weapons in the ongoing peace initiative in the state as a result of building trust, confidence and absence of stigmatization on the part of committee solely responsible for the disarmament, sais CP Nagogo.

He explained that the state government under Governor Muhammad Bello Matawalle has played a key role in ensuring both sides of the warring parties see reasons to surrender their weapons as part of the peace dialogue and support the committee in all ramifications to achieve the set goals

The commissioner of police noted that the committee has between 25th of July to 5th of September, 2019 received rifles and ammunition from bandits for various reasons.

According to CP Usman Nagogo the repentant bandits have silenced and collected rifles of some of the recalcitrant bandits who refused to tow the line of disarmament and amnesty and handed them over to the CP adding that the larger percentage of the rifles and pistols were voluntary surrendered by the repentant bandits as a sign of accepting the peace process.

While parading the surrendered arms, Nagogo said that the local vigilante known as “Yansakai” also surrendered two hundred light weapons of a different calibre which he said were much an imitation of AK-47, RPG, LMG and other sophisticated weapons.

However, CP Usman Nagogo noted that fighting banditry and related crimes didn’t divert their attention from other heinous crimes being perpetrated in towns and cities of the state which led to the receiving of Six Brand New Hilux patrol vans for joint patrol in Gusau metropolitan.

Nagogo said joint patrol that consists of security men drawn from Police, Military, DSS and Civil Defence.

The Press Briefing was attended by all the leading security chiefs in the state
