About 500 indigent women and widows in Kwara have been empowered by a Non -governmental organization to enable them to start up a business to keep their families.
Speaking during the flag-off of the disbursement of the fund in Ilorin the, founder of the organization Alhaji Yakubu Gobir, said that the aim of the exercise was to reduce the residents level of poverty to the minimum.
According to him, the empowerment programme was targeted at the womenfolk as they are the most vulnerable in society.
Alhaji Gobir explained that the fund was set aside to provide easy access to interest-free microloans to indigenes of Asa, Ilorin East, Ilorin West and Ilorin South Local Government Areas to enable the start-up a Small or Medium Enterprises.
He advised the beneficiaries not to abuse the privilege given to them, adding that the money should be invested in their businesses.
Alhaji Gobir noted that the money disbursed which ranged between N10,000 and N50,000 depends on the assessment of the needs of beneficiaries.
