Napoli wins as Liverpool, Chelsea loose

Defending champions, Liverpool lost away to Napoli in the first match of the Champions League group stage.

Two goals by Dries Mertens and Fernando Llorente earned Napoli a 2-0 win at home to holders Liverpool in the Reds’ Champions League defence.

Andy Robertson was deemed to have tripped Jose Callejon in the box and, after VAR ratified the penalty decision, Mertens squeezed his penalty past Adrian in the 82nd minute.

In a similar, Pogba-Rashford situation, Barkley-Jorginho penalty farce cost Chelsea their first win in their match up against Valencia.

In the 87th minute, the English midfielder blew a chance to secure a point for the Blues which led to a  shocking 1-0 Champions League defeat to crisis-hit Valencia.

.Ross Barkley, who only came onto the pitch for seven minutes as a substitute, insisted that he would take the spot-kick turning away Jorginho, Willian and Tammy Abraham.

The Englishman failed to justify his actions, though, as he blazed the ball over the bar to  the displeasure of the two Brazilian-born stars.

The defeat means that Lampard is still has no win in his first three home games in charge, with Liverpool as their next meet up.
