A fire at an Islamic school in the Liberian suburban town of Paynesville City has killed at least twenty-seven children.
“The kids were learning the Koran when the fire broke out,” police spokesman Moses Carter told Reuters on Wednesday.
Mr. Carter said the blaze was caused by an electrical fault, adding that further investigations were ongoing.
The spokesman had originally reported that thirty children were killed before revising the death toll down to twenty-seven. Two survivors of the blaze were taken to the hospital.
President George Weah said in a tweet on Wednesday that all Liberia mourned for the children who “perished in Tuesday night’s fire” incident.
