Saudi oil attacks: US fingers Iran

The US has reiterated its claim that Iran was behind attacks on major Saudi oil facilities on Saturday.

Early on Monday, the Pentagon issued satellite images and cited intelligence to back up claims made by Trump administration officials.

Iran has denied involvement in the September 14 air attacks, which were claimed by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels.

But US and international media have reported unnamed Trump administration officials as saying the direction and extent of the attacks cast doubt on Houthi involvement.

The attacks have cut world oil supplies by 5% and prices have soared.

On Saturday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo blamed Tehran, without providing any evidence, prompting the government there to accuse Washington of deceit.

In a Sunday tweet, President Donald Trump issued no direct accusation against the Iranians, but suggested possible military action once the perpetrator was known.
