Cashew farmers advocate access to improved seedlings

Cashew farmers in the country want the Federal Government to support its members with the new improved cashew seedlings to achieve bumper harvest.

President of the National Cashew Association of Nigeria, NCAN, Mr Ojo Ajanaku made the call at a forum in Abuja

He said acquiring the improved seedlings would enable old cashew plantations to be revived into viable agro business.

According to Mr Ajanaku if much attention is given to cashew production it would ensure speedy diversification of the nation’s economy, thereby creating massive job opportunities for the teeming youths.

“We have different kind of karnels, the bigger the karnels the higher the price, we have W320 and W240 karnels, now the improved seedlings are majorly for the W320 which is what the world wanted…so we are calling on the Ministry of Agriculture to support our farmers with this high breed seedlings which is also the new improved seedlings to boost production because Nigeria is already blessed with a good soil” he said

Mr Ajanaku also said training of farmers have commenced in some cashew producing state.

“We are training about one thousand five hundred farmers in each cashew producing states, so that they can train others, we are calling for the collaboration of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN and other stakeholders to ensure that every farmers benefit from the training, we already have the assistance of our technical partners, we are urging farmers to make themselves available for this training”

The NCAN national president, who announced that fourteen thousand cashew farmers have so far been captured in their database, advised those yet to register to avail themselves the opportunity, to benefit from the Federal Government Anchor Borrowers Scheme.
