Experts urge FG to engage statisticians on data

The President of Nigerian Statistical Association NSA, Prof Sidney Onyeagu wants Federal government to involve Statisticians in addressing, Unemployment, Poverty and Insecurity across the Country.

Prof Oyeagu who made the call at the 43rd NSA Annual Conference held in Lokoja, Kogi State, expressed concern over the unknown population of the Country.

NSA is a Galaxy of Professionals with the mandate of providing accurate data on issues that are affecting the Society for government to take necessary action.

Prof Onyeagu spoke on this year’s conference Theme “Population Explosion Statistical Views and Solution” also explained the consequences of overpopulation.

“What are the Consequences of Population Explosion? It will cause hunger, poverty and unemployment and you know when there are no jobs for people, Bandits,  Armed Robbery will happen” Prof Onyeagu explained.

The Chairman, Board, National Bureau of Statistics, Dr Kabiru Nakaura solicited the support of the State government for the Professionals to carry out Field Survey on Issues affecting people at the grassroots.

The Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahya Bello, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Funmilayo Ayoade also stressed the importance of accurate Data in ensuring rapid development in the State.

“Statistics is very important in enhancing development because with accurate Data, we will know where we are and where we are going, Statistics figures are relevant for the development of our State.” Kogi SSG stressed.

The Director, Statistics Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr Mohammed Tumala advocated an increase in the Nation’s Economy to cater to the need of the people.

Some members of the Association, Mr Lincoln Bassey and Prof. Ekaete Enang called for the drastic measure to address overpopulation, Migration and Mortality.

 The Statisticians expressed optimism that accurate Data on nation’s Population would help the government to project for the future of the country.
