3 dead at FUOYE students protest

Authorities of the Federal University Oye Ekiti has announced the immediate and indefinite closure of the institution following the students violence Protest over Poor Power Supply which was alleged to have led to death of three of them and left many injured.

The school authorities subsequently disbanded the student’s union government of the institution and ordered the students to vacate the school premises.

Radio Nigeria correspondent reports that the students during the protest went uncontrollable and attacked the convoy of the wife of Ekiti State Governor Mrs Bisi Fayemi who ran to the protest while on tour of the local govt.

Trouble started when the students barricaded the highway and prevented the convoy of the wife of the Governor from passing.

The students engaged the security operatives in free for all and vandalised vehicles in the convoy, set fire on a police van and snatched a riffle from a security agents.

An attempt by the officers attached to the convoy to disperse the students resulted in a clash leading to the death of one of the student.

The students however, attacked a police officer at the scene of the crisis while the Governor’s wife was whisked away.

Some Journalists and government officials on the entourage of the Governor’s wife were said to have sustained injuries during the crisis.

The President of the Students’ Union Government, Oluwaseun Awodola had lamented poor power supply, which he said had heightened insecurity on the institution’s two campuses.

FUOYE Public Relations Officer, Mr Godfrey Bakji, who said the university was not in control of power supply, described the protest as not necessary.

However, the Chief Press Secretary to Ekiti State Governor, Yinka Oyebode said the attack on Mrs Fayemi’s convoy was unfortunate.

When contacted the Police Public Relations Officer in Ekiti state Caleb Ikechukwu said the police was aware of the rights of the students hence efforts were only made to disperse them before they started attacking the people.
