The Petroleum University says it is developing a modular refinery to complement the effort of the Federal Government Refineries in refining Petroleum products to meet local demand.
The Chairman Governing Council of the University of Petroleum, Effurun, Delta State, Professor Shehu Zuru stated this in a news briefing in Abuja.
He explained that building the modular Refinery by the institution would increase local participation and also assist in tackling the menace of oil bunkering in the Niger Delta.
The Pro-Chancellor who highlighted that as part of achievements recorded by the present leadership of the University, said to include the establishment of Post Graduate Courses and other programs to ensure real-world experience on petroleum industry.
He urged stakeholders and the management of the Nigerian University system to assist the institution to address issues of funding and rehabilitation of decaying infrastructure.
Digressing into the efforts to revamp existing refineries and end the shortage in downstream infrastructure in line with government’s policy, Prof Zuru stressed that with upcoming refineries, including the Dangote Refinery, Nigeria would soon become self-sufficient and an exporter of refined petroleum products.
He urged Nigerians seeking for greener pasture abroad to look inward, as the nation was blessed with abandoned natural and human resources to carter for its citizen’s needs.
Petroleum University, Effurun, Delta State is the first specialised institution in Nigeria and West Africa as well as the sixth in the world.
