The Ward and Local Government Congresses of the Peoples Democratic Party was characterized by dynamite explosion, gunshots and protests by supporters loyal to some of the aspirants ahead of the Governorship Primaries scheduled to hold on September Three.
Suspected thugs reportedly loyal to some governorship aspirants of the Party threw dynamites few kilometres close to the PDP State secretariat along Lambert Eradiri Road in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital.
Reports say the hoodlums, who could not gain access to the Party’s secretariat which was cordoned off by armed police and other security operatives, decided to throw the explosive along the road, though no one was injured.
Eyewitnesses in the Area said they also heard the sound of gunshots reportedly fired from a fast-moving vehicle.
Loyalists of some aspirants led a protest to the party secretariat where they expressed their grievances to the congress committee and demanded the cancellation of the exercise.
A PDP Ward Congress Committee headed by the Ebonyi State governor, Mr David Umahi, arrived the state on Thursday to conduct the ward congress.
They held meetings with the governorship aspirants at the Government House and later met with other PDP members at the Secretariat where they declared the process open.
Governor Umahi told the protesters that there was no need to demand the cancellation of the congress since it held peacefully within the laid down rules and regulations of the party.
Although the Commissioner of Police, Uche Anozia, could not be reached for comments, some policemen in the area confirmed the incident and said the explosion and gunshots occurred far from the secretariat of the PDP.
They said it took place in empty space far from the secretariat due to tight security around the PDP Secretariat.
