Delta State Governor, Doctor Ifeanyi Okowa says any structure built on waterways in Warri, Uvwie and environs will be demolished by his administration.
Governor Okowa stated this in Asaba when he received the final preliminary Report of the Committee to study and advise Government on measures required to tackle and control flooding in Effurun, Warri and environs.
The governor warned officials of the Ministry of Lands and Surveys to avoid issuing building approval certificates to property developers without visiting such sites to know whether they are on roads or waterways.
He said any official of the Ministry who engages in such action would face sanctions.
Governor Okowa who expressed worry over the plight of people displaced by flood warned that any building under construction marked for demolition must be enforced by the relevant authorities.
Chairman of the committee,Mr John Onwualu had in his presentation, attributed the flooding in Warri, Uvwie and environs to blocked drainages, overgrown weeds on water channels, and developers building on the waterways.
He said over one hundred flood-prone areas and thirteen natural courses had been identified in the areas.
