The World health Organisation, WHO has called on the ECOWAS member States to invest in public health policies towards eliminating Hepatitis B and C in Africa.
The WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Matshidiso Moeti made the call in a message to mark this year’s World hepatitis day.
Dr Moeti, who was represented by the WHO officer in charge in Nigeria, Mr Clement Peters said this year’s theme “Invest in Eliminating Hepatitis” was a timely reminder that the disease can be eliminated by 2030.
The WHO Regional Director who commended some African countries that have already stated implementing policies to eliminate the disease called on pharmaceutical companies to reduce the cost of hepatitis B and C medicines.
Dr Moeti also called on stakeholders in the health sector to continue playing their role in raising community and political awareness.
