Ruga Settlement was aimed at addressing farmers and herdsmen conflicts across the country.
“Ruga Settlement” seeks to settle migrant pastoral families.
This was contained in a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu in Abuja on Sunday.
The Federal Government is planning this “Ruga” to curb open grazing of animals that continue to pose security threats to farmers and herders.
The statement explains that beneficiaries of the Ruga Settlement would include all persons in animal husbandry, not only Fulani herders.
It simply means rural settlement in which animal farmers, not just cattle herders, would be settled in an organised place with necessary provision and adequate basic amenities.
Amenities such as schools, hospitals, road networks, veterinary clinics, markets and manufacturing entities would be provided to add value to meats and animal products.
The statement says the aim of the settlement was to drastically reduce the conflicts between herders and farmers.
Malam Shehu says the initiative will lead to job creation, access to credit facilities, security for pastoral families and curtailed cattle rustling.
He dismissed the insinuation that Federal Government planned to seize state land or force state governments to embrace the scheme.
