FG directs schools to resume teaching of history

The federal government has directed all primary and secondary schools in the country to resume the teaching of history as a standalone subject.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr Sonny Echono, who made the statement on Friday in Abuja, said the directive has been given and it is automatic that all the schools would implement the directive simultaneously.

“It is with immediate implementation. So, definitely for the next academic year everybody will fall in line because we already articulated the curriculum and the examination should be done along those lines,” Echono said.

Professor Wole Soyinka and Femi Kuti had advised the federal government not to consider history as just an academic exercise but as a need for the growth and development of Nigeria and the African continent.

It is a welcomed relief that the teaching of history is reinstated in schools. It is unbelievable that it was scraped from the Nigerian curriculum in the first place. How else do we hope to educate the young about Nigeria and help them and ourselves guard against our country’s past mistakes? How else could the young honor and be proud of their country when they know nothing about its history?
