Two officers of the Nigeria Custom Service attached to Kwara/Niger/Kogi area Command were seriously injured following a violent clash that erupted between them and smugglers in Ilorin, Kwara state.
The clash occured at Offa garage area of Ilorin at about 10 am on Tuesday when the Custom men were trying to convey four buses loaded with imported rice which they impounded along Ilorin/Offa/Kabba road in the early hours of the day.
Radio Nigeria correspondent gathered that the Custom men were conveying the four buses loaded with rice to their office in Ilorin when some hoodlums allegedly recruited by the smugglers who were the rice owners attacked them.
The two officials injured were the drivers who were driving two of the buses to the Custom office in Ilorin,
An eye witness said the Custom officers were conveying three of the buses which they seized with rice to their office when the attackers at Idi-Igba, Offa garage area, started to beating them and dragged them out of the vehicle.
When contacted the Public Relations officer of Custom in Kwara state, Mrs Stella Okpo who confirmed the attack on the Custom men, also noted that the two officers were seriously injured during the attack.
Mrs Okpo said the two injured officers have been taken to the hospital for treatment while one of the buses had been impounded and parked at the Ilorin office of the Custom.
