Bayelsa govt inaugurates committee for literary icon

Chairman, Association of Nigerian Authors, ANA Benue state chapter, Mr. Charles Iornumbe has appealed to government at all levels to engage writers meaningfully for them to offer their expertise for the development of society.

Mr. Iornumbe made the appeal during an interview with newsmen in Makurdi while reacting to the inauguration of a 27 member committee by the Bayelsa state government to plan the burial of a literary icon, Dr. Gabriel Okara who died at the age of 98.

According to the ANA Benue chairman, the constitution of the burial committee in honour of Dr. Okara was noble because, it is a sign of hope for Nigerian writers that, they could be recognised even in death.

He said Nigerian writers given their vast knowledge and experience, have enough to offer in many sectors of the nation’s economy and deserved recognition by government in their life time so that, society could access them by their performance to justify the skill they portray in their works.
