VP tasks Judiciary on justice system

Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo has called on the bar and the bench to ensure proper justice system through moral, ethical and statutory standards.

He made the call on Friday during the award night of the Body of Benchers at the National Judicial Institute, Abuja.

Prof. Osinbajo and 131 others received the awards of Body of Benchers.

The Vice President said the Body had borne the enormous responsibility of being the conscience, arbiter, judge and interlocutor for the legal profession and administration of justice system.

Awards were also presented to past chairmen of the body.

The Vice president warned that taking the path of business as usual instead of more courageous path of renewal, would mean that the profession would face the extinction of our credibility soon enough.

The Senate president, Bukola Saraki commended those honored at the event for the role they have played in society.

Sen Saraki said benchers were key to instilling confidence in the profession, insisting that inconsistency would create problems.

The Chairman of the Body of Benchers, Alhaji Bashir Dalhatu said the event was organised to recognize the efforts of those who worked to create, maintain and sustain the values of the legal profession and the judiciary.

Two categories of awards at the event were presented to former Chairmen of Body of Benchers and to Life Benchers.

Body of Benchers is a statutory body established by the Legal Practitioners Act, I962 responsible for Call to the Bar of persons seeking to be legal practitioners as well as discipline of erring lawyers while a Life Bencher serves in the body for life and is a legal practitioner of the highest distinction.
