President Muhammadu Buhari has charged traditional rulers in the country to use their positions to foster peace and security in their domains during the 2019 general election in the country.
The President gave the charge at the 10th General Assembly of the National Council of Traditional Rulers in Nigeria, NCTRN, in Abuja.
President Buhari who was represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said the role of security agencies in curtailing the nefarious activities of hoodlums during elections could not be over-emphasized.
He also said the cooperation of the royal fathers in the provision of quality intelligence as the most trusted repository of local intelligence would boost security services.
President Buhari enjoined the traditional rulers to use their offices to curtail irresponsible utterances by their people, that could lead to violence.
He also encouraged the security agencies to work closely with the royal fathers to surmount insecurity.
The President stressed the commitment of his government towards a transparent, free and fair, credible as well as peaceful election this year.
In his comments, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, who is the Co-Chairman of the General Assembly of the National Council of Traditional Rulers in Nigeria, gave assurance that the royal fathers would galvanize their subjects to perform their civic duties by voting in the election.
Oba Ogunwusi said the royal fathers would also ensure a peaceful conduct of the 2019 general election
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, who is the Co-Chairman of the Council of Traditional Rulers, the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, and the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II were among the royal fathers present.
