Gowon expresses optimism over Nigeria’s situation

The Headquarters of the Deeper Life Bible Church, Gbagada Lagos , is witnessing what can be described as its biggest worship ever, as  the crème de la crème in Nigerian, including top government functionaries both present and former, converge there for the much talked about Special National Prayer Service tagged “Nigeria Prays”.

Even before the former kick off of the service at a few minutes past 9 am, the massive church auditorium was already filled to capacity.

Among dignitaries seated on the podium  include the Special Adviser to the  President on media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina representing President Mohammadu Buhari , and the Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo who  is being represented by the Minister of Trade and Investment, Dr. Okechukwu Enelamah.

Former Head of State, Retired General Yakubu Gowon , convener of the Special Service is also seated on the podium alongside his Wife.

It is a litany of dignitaries, from the governors of Lagos, Ekiti, Edo and Bayelsa States, former Governor Donald Duke and  his wife, first lady of Ogun State, to the DG of NAPTIP Mrs. Julie Okah-Donli who took the first gospel reading.

A solemn and sober atmosphere indeed, many hymns are being rendered with absolute dedication by worshippers, even as different prayers and words of exhortation, rent the air.

In his remark, the Convener, General Yakubu Gowon said faced with problems of insecurity, political challenges and others, Nigerians should prayer like never before, for God to intervene and heal the land.

Referring to a verse of the Bible where God promised to grant the requests of his people if they humble themselves in prayer, the former Head of state expressed optimism that Nigeria will succeed and come out stronger.

While admonishing Christians from all denominations to strive to prayer together in unity of purpose, as well as live in righteousness,

General Gowon also urged them to resist the temptation of involving in any form of retaliation, like reprisal after attack by insurgents, saying vengeance should be left to God alone.

He encouraged the authorities in the country to be alive to their responsibilities  by ensuring adequate protection of lives and property, as well as urgently reposition the country for sustainable peace  and progress.

The Minister of Trade and Investment Dr Okechukwu Enelamah, presided as prayers were offered for God to intervene in different aspects of national life including Security, Unity of the church in Nigeria, Youths and educational system, economy and the three organs of government, namely  Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary.

The representative of the President, Me. Femi Adesina will in the course of the program deliver the message of President Buhari, just as worshippers earnestly await the sermon by the General Oversee of the Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor Kumuyi.
