The Niger Government has approved the release of N300 million to the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) to combat gully erosion and flooding in the state.
The State Governor, Abubakar Bello disclosed this on Friday when the National Project Coordinator, NEWMAP, Malam Salisu Dahiru, visit him at the Government House in Minna.
Governor Bello said that the money was part of the state government’s 2018 counterpart funding for the World Bank-assisted two million dollars grant to help address the gully erosion.
He stressed that the project was targeted these selected areas in the state: Rafin-Gora in Kontagora, Baban Rami in Mashegu, Ungwar Shanu Tayaman in Kagara, and Efumayaki/Efumada in Bida.
Other areas are Lapai, Agaie, Suleja and Mokwa and Minna metropolis.
Governor Bello urged NEWMAP to prudently utilize the resources effectively for the projects.
Responding, Coordinator of NEWMAP, Mallam Dahiru said the World Bank had released two million dollars as preparatory grant for the project in Niger State.
“Our priority is to control the problems of gully erosion and flooding, particularly those experienced this year” he stated.
