Army denies killing unarmed herdsmen

The Special Military Operation covering Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba and Zamfara states code named ‘Operation Whirl Stroke’ has denied reports that troops killed and maimed herdsmen and their cattle in Nassarawa state.

The Nasarawa chapter of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN had alleged that soldiers killed six herdsmen and 150 cows last week.

Addressing newsmen at Tactical Air command NAF BASE Makurdi, the Acting Director, Defence Information, Brigadier General John Agim said troops carried out a cordon and search at a herdsmen militia camp at Barkin Korta village in Keana Local Government Area of Nasarawa state during which the militia attacked killing two soldiers and injuring five others including the officer commanding the operation.

He said while the military was not linking MACBAN to the militia, investigation has begun to unravel those behind the incident.

Brigadier General Agim said within the two months of its assignment, Operation Whirl Stroke has restored peace and order in Nasarawa, Taraba and Benue state with a reduction in the frequency of attacks with some IDPs returning to their homes.

He therefore urged the people to continue to have faith in their Operation assuring that no stone would be left unturned in restoring total peace to the troubled states.
