The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo has urged the state governors to think beyond their terms in office and show commitment towards laying a foundation that their successors will build on.
He stated this at the 2017 Leadership Awards held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.
Vice President Osinbajo advised the state governments to plan like a country to fully maximize their potentials, pointing out that ten of Nigeria’s States with the highest GDPs have higher GDPs than over 15 African countries.
According to him, the states could take the same path that the federal government had taken by prioritizing agriculture and creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.
The Chairman of the Leadership Newspapers Group, Mr. Sam Nda-Isaiah, advised the state governments to explore models that would help them remain financially viable instead of waiting for allocations from the federation account.
The keynote speaker and former governor of Cross River State, Mr Donald Duke, urged the states to find out products and mineral resources for which they have a comparative advantage over others and develop them.
The theme for this year’s award ceremony was “Towards Financial Viable State Governments”.
