A professor of physics, Obini Ekpe Ekpe has stressed the need for young scientists to take interest in astronomy and astrophysics.
Ekpe made the assertion in an event at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia state.
According to him, the study of astronomy and astrophysics looks at how and when the universe started, as well as what the future holds for the universe which would help in appreciating the components of the universe especially that of the stars and sun.
He maintained that due to the proximity to the earth, the sun is a unique resource center for the stellar phenomena.
He noted that such study would enhance the idea on how to reproduce huge energy- generating engines that is scattered over the world.
He opined that motivation of young scientists could be achieved through scholarship awards, research grants and adequate funding.
He was also of the opinion that universities of agriculture should partner with the National Space Research and Development Agency in areas of research to promote astronomy, astrophysics and space science, adding that it is the best way of tapping from the unlimited resources available inside the giant laboratory called the sky.
