Madagascar: Tropical storm kills 17

At least seventeen people have so far died following a tropical storm that struck eastern Madagascar over the weekend, authorities say.

More than 6,000 people were displaced by the storm, called Eliakim, the National Office of Risk and Disaster Management said in a statement Monday.

Reuters reports that the tropical storm started pounding the island’s Mananara region, 635 kilometres north-east of the national capital Antananarivo, on Saturday night and had a wind speed of 85 kilometres per hour and gusts of 120 kilometres per hour.

In January, the island’s disaster management office said Tropical Cyclone Ava killed fifty-one people.
