Military commences exercise in Benue

The Special Military Exercise approved by President Muhammadu Buhari to curtail crisis in the North Central States has be launched by the Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Buratai.

Performing the ceremony in Gbajimba, Guma Local Government Area, General Buratai assured that the army would bring stability to all the crisis areas within the region and ensure that all criminal elements are checked.

The Chief of Army Staff who noted that the aim of the operation was not to target any religious or ethnic group warned all the commanders on ground to ensure that the rules of engagement are strictly applied.

He expressed appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari for approving and providing the resources as well as the Governors of Benue, Nasarawa and Kogi State for their support to the ensure the success of the exercise.

Governor Samuel Ortom expressed confidence in the capacity of the military to deal with the security situation and restore peace to the state, saying Benue people would support the exercise through provision of useful information to the troop.

The Governor of Kogi State, Mr. Yahaya Bello and a representative of the Governor of Nasarawa State all pledged to support the operation so that peace could be restored to the region for the people to be free to carry out their farming business.

The Commander in charge of the Exercise in Benue State, Brigadier General Clement Apere said they were ready with enough personnel to end the violence.

Two residents of the area , Margaret Akura and John Gbande expressed the optimism that the coming of the exercise to Benue State would solve the problem.
