Justice Hadiza Rabiu-Shagari of a Lagos Federal High Court, has ordered remand of a businessman, Ezeanwu Ifeanyi, in prison custody pending commencement of his trial.
The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration Control, NAFDAC, had arraigned Ezeanwu Ifeanyi, before the court for alleged importation of a big size container loaded with fake drugs of banned Tramadol, Ibumol, Heogra, and others.
NAFDAC prosecutor, Mr. Umar Shamaki, alleged that the businessman was found in possession of the said container which contained Tramadol Hydrochloric tablets of 225mg, Tramadol tablets of 250mg, Royal Tramadol of 225mg, Ibumol tablet of 50mg, Heogra tablet of 150mg and Diarrhea capsules.
The accused, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
In view of his plea, Mr. Shamaki, asked the court for adjournment and also urged the court to remand the accused in prison custody, pending trial.
However, lawyer to the accused, Mr. Chinwobi Adiele told the court that his client’s bail application is pending before the court.
Responding, the prosecutor informed the court that he was served of the application in court this morning, and that he needed time to respond to the application, saying that non reply to the application would mean that the prosecution had admitted to the facts deposed therein.
The matter has been adjourned till sixteenth of next month, for hearing and ruling on the accused bail application.
